Key Ingredients for this Crispy Rice Tofu Bowl
This high protein vegan tofu bowl with crispy rice is made using simple, flavorful ingredients that each play a key role in bringing the crunch, umami, and freshness. Hereโs a breakdown of what youโll need to create this viral crispy rice bowl:
- Frozen Jasmine Rice or Day-Old Rice: The base of the crispy riceโusing cold, cooked rice helps it crisp up perfectly in the oven. Jasmine rice adds the best texture and mild flavor.
- Toasted Sesame Oil: Adds a nutty richness and helps crisp up the rice as it bakes.
- Light Soy Sauce: A splash of soy sauce infuses both the rice and tofu with savory, salty depth.
- Chili Crunch Oil: Brings subtle heat and extra umami to the rice layer. A little goes a long way!
- Extra Firm Tofu: The protein star of the bowl. Firm tofu holds up during cooking and develops a beautiful golden exterior when pan-fried.
- Sesame Seeds: Lightly toasted during the cooking process, they add a nutty crunch to your tofu.
- Carrot Slices: Thinly sliced carrots add color and crunch for that fresh, raw contrast. Cucumber Slices: Cool, crisp, and refreshingโthese slices keep every bite feeling balanced and light.
- Shelled Edamame: A great plant-based protein booster that also adds a pop of color and texture.
- Nori Komi Furikake: A Japanese seasoning blend made with sesame seeds and seaweed that takes your tofu rice bowl to the next level. Sprinkle generously.
Substitution Options
Whether youโre missing an ingredient or just love to personalize your meals, there are plenty of easy substitutions to make this tofu bowl with crispy rice your own. Here are some tasty swaps to try:
- Rice: Donโt have jasmine rice? Use any leftover cooked rice you have on handโbasmati, brown rice, or even sushi rice will still crisp up beautifully.
- Tofu: Extra firm tofu works best, but you can swap in super firm, sprouted, or even baked tofu for ease. Tempeh could also work if thatโs more your style.
- Chili Crunch Oil: Not into spice? Omit or swap for a little sesame oil mixed with crushed red pepper flakes.
- Edamame: No edamame? Try frozen green peas, edamame hummus, or even chickpeas for a different plant-based protein boost.
- Furikake: If you canโt find furikake, crushed roasted seaweed (nori) with a sprinkle of sesame seeds makes a great homemade alternative.
- Veggies: Go wild with the veggie mixโthinly sliced radishes, shredded red cabbage, or even avocado are all excellent additions.
Feel free to get creative and adjust the toppings and seasonings to suit your tastes or what you already have in your kitchen. This tofu rice bowl is flexible, fresh, and easy to customize.

How to Make Your Crispy Rice Tofu Bowl
This tofu bowl with crispy rice may look fancy, but itโs surprisingly simple to pull together! While your rice crisps up in the oven, youโll have just enough time to prep your tofu and veggies. By the time everything comes together in the bowl, youโll be rewarded with the ultimate high protein vegan meal thatโs as satisfying as it is flavorful.

Bake the Crispy Rice
Start by adding your frozen or day-old rice to a mixing bowl along with sesame oil, soy sauce, and chili crunch oil. Mix until everything is evenly coated.
Spread the rice out in a thin, even layer on a foil-lined baking sheet. Bake at 400ยฐF for 15โ20 minutes, flipping halfway. Keep an eye on it as every oven is a little differentโit should be golden and crisp.

Cook the Tofu
While the rice bakes, cube your extra firm tofu and toss it with soy sauce, sesame seeds, salt, and pepper. No need to press the tofu if youโre using a high-protein variety.
Add tofu to a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Sautรฉ for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and slightly crispy on all sides.

Prep the Veggies
Use a mandolin or sharp knife to slice up your fresh cucumbers and carrots into thin rounds or ribbons. Set aside with your shelled edamame.
Assemble Your Bowl
Now comes the fun part. Layer your bowl with crispy rice, golden tofu, fresh cucumber and carrots, and edamame. Finish it off with a sprinkle of furikake and toss everything gently to combine.
Serve immediately and enjoy every crunchy, flavorful bite of this viral crispy rice bowl masterpiece.
Tips and Tricks
Here are some pro tips to help you nail your crispy rice tofu bowl with ease and maximize that satisfying crunch, freshness, and flavor:
- Use Cold or DayโOld Rice: Starting with chilled rice helps it crisp up beautifully in the ovenโyouโll get way more crunch.
- Watch Your Oven Time: Ovens vary, so check your rice around the 15-minute mark. You want golden and crackly, not burned!
- Even Tofu Cubes: Cut tofu into uniform pieces for consistent golden browning and texture throughout your tofu bowl with crispy rice.
- Prep Components Ahead: Have your veggies sliced and tofu seasoned while the rice bakesโthat multitasking makes assembly a breeze.
- Serve Fresh: The crispy rice loses its punch over time, so enjoy this tofu rice bowl right after assembling for the best crunch and freshness.
These tips will help you create a tofu bowl with crispy rice thatโs flavorful, high in protein, and irresistibly crisp. Youโll be hooked from the first bite!
Storage Instructions
Hereโs how to keep your high protein vegan tofu bowl with crispy rice tasting its freshest, even as leftovers:
- Refrigeration: Store leftovers in an airtight container within two hours of cooking to keep freshness and food safety.
- Separate the Crunch: If possible, keep the crispy rice portion separate from the tofu and veggies. This helps preserve the texture of each component.
- Reheating Hint: Warm leftovers in the oven or air fryer to bring back that irresistible crunchโmicrowaving tends to make everything soggy.
- Best Enjoyed Soon: The crispy rice is at its best within 1โ2 days. After that, the texture and freshness will start to diminish.
By storing wisely and reheating thoughtfully, youโll get to enjoy this tofu rice bowl just as much the next day as you did the first time.

FAQs
Here are a few common questions you might have about making the crispy rice tofu bowlโletโs clear things up:
-
Can I use fresh rice instead of frozen or dayโold rice?
You can, but fresh rice tends to be too soft and moist to crisp up properly. Use chilled or dayโold rice for best crunchโeven leftover rice works wonders in this viral crispy rice bowl.
-
Do I need to press the tofu if itโs labeled extra firm or highโprotein?
Not necessarily! Highโprotein extraโfirm tofu usually holds its shape and browns well without pressing. If your tofu seems very moist, a quick 5โminute press between paper towels can help, but itโs optional.
-
How can I keep the crispy rice from getting soggy too fast?
Store components separatelyโespecially the crispy rice. When reheating, crisp it up again in the oven or air fryer; avoid microwaving to maintain that signature crunchy texture.
-
Can I swap out any of the veggies or toppings?
Absolutely! One of the best things about this tofu rice bowl is how customizable it isโfeel free to use shredded cabbage, radishes, avocado, or your favorite crunchy veggies. Just keep that balance of textures in mind for maximum satisfaction.
