Key Ingredients for this Pistachio Protein Ice Cream

To make this dreamy, high protein pistachio ice cream, you only need a few key ingredientsโ€”and each one plays a role in getting that smooth, creamy texture and bold pistachio flavor. This ninja creami pistachio protein ice cream comes together with just six ingredients, but donโ€™t let the simplicity fool youโ€”itโ€™s a flavor bomb.

  • Vanilla Protein Shake: This is the base of your high protein pistachio ice cream. It adds creaminess and a solid protein boost while keeping the recipe low in calories and sugar.
  • Nonfat Milk: Helps slightly thin out the mixture so it blends smoothly in your Ninja Creami. It also keeps things light and refreshing without compromising richness.
  • Pure Pistachio Paste: The star of the show. This brings a deep, roasted pistachio flavor that makes this ice cream taste luxe and indulgent without needing artificial flavoring.
  • Vanilla Instant Pudding Mix: Adds creaminess, thickness, and that signature scoopable texture that makes your low calorie pistachio ice cream feel just like the real thing.
  • Reduced Fat Whipped Topping: A little whipped topping gives the base an extra fluffy texture and helps enhance the creamy mouthfeel in every bite.
  • Cinnamon Pistachios: These mix-ins add a delicious crunch and a hint of spice that takes the final result to another level. Fold them in at the end for the ultimate nutty texture.

Substitution Options

Whether youโ€™re working with different ingredients on hand or looking to tweak the flavor profile a bit, this pistachio protein ice cream is easy to customize. Here are a few swaps that still keep the texture and flavor on point:

  • Vanilla Protein Shake: You can swap this for any other high protein vanilla shake or even a plain unsweetened protein milk, though the creaminess may vary slightly.
  • Nonfat Milk: Any milk works hereโ€”almond milk, oat milk, or even 2% dairy milk if youโ€™re not worried about keeping it low calorie.
  • Pistachio Paste: Canโ€™t find pistachio paste? A small spoon of almond butter or cashew butter gives a similar creamy nutty flavor, just note it wonโ€™t be pistachio-specific.
  • Pudding Mix: Feel free to experiment with other instant pudding flavors like cheesecake or white chocolate for a unique twist, but the vanilla keeps it classic.
  • Whipped Topping: You can omit this entirely or replace it with a spoonful of Greek yogurt for a tangier, thicker base.

Donโ€™t be afraid to make this ninja creami pistachio protein ice cream your own. The best part of this low calorie pistachio ice cream recipe is how flexible and forgiving it is!

**If there is a sub I haven’t mentioned above, it’s because I have not tested it and can’t speak for how well it would work for this recipe.

Equipment and Tools for this Pistachio Protein Ice Cream

No complicated equipment requiredโ€”just a few key tools and your Ninja Creami. This recipe keeps things simple so you can whip up your pistachio protein ice cream whenever the craving hits. Hereโ€™s everything youโ€™ll need to make this low calorie pistachio ice cream recipe a success:

  • Ninja Creami Machine: This is essential for getting the silky-smooth texture that makes this ninja creami pistachio protein ice cream so irresistible.
  • Ninja Creami Pint Container: Be sure to use the compatible container that fits your machine. Freezing in this container is key to proper blending.
  • Milk Frother or Small Whisk: Helpful for mixing your ingredients before freezing. A frother makes it super quick and lump-free.
  • Freezer: Youโ€™ll need enough space to let your Creami pint freeze completely overnight in an upright position.
  • Spoon or Spatula: For scooping out and serving the final product. Also handy if you need to gently stir between spins.
  • Measuring Scale: Accuracy matters when it comes to achieving the perfect creamy consistencyโ€”especially when working with high protein ingredients.

With these tools on hand, making your own homemade pistachio ice cream is easy, fun, and oh-so-satisfying.

How to Make Using Ninja Creami

This creamy, crunchy, pistachio protein ice cream is seriously one of the easiest desserts to throw togetherโ€”and the payoff is next level. With just a few minutes of prep and some overnight freezer time, youโ€™ll have a high protein pistachio ice cream thatโ€™s thick, smooth, and packed with flavor.

pistachio protein ice cream 01

Make the Ice Cream Base

Add all your base ingredientsโ€”vanilla protein shake, nonfat milk, pistachio paste, pudding mix, and whipped toppingโ€”to a Ninja Creami pint container.

Use a small whisk or milk frother to mix everything together well. It doesnโ€™t have to be perfect, as the machine will blend it later.

Freeze the Pint

Secure the lid and place the container in the freezer. Let it freeze flat and undisturbed for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight, so it sets properly for blending.

Blend in the Ninja Creami

Once frozen solid, remove from the freezer and let the pint thaw at room temp for 20โ€“30 minutes. Place it into your Ninja Creami machine and spin it on โ€œLight Ice Creamโ€ using the โ€œFullโ€ setting. The center will likely form a holeโ€”this is normal!

Add the Mix-Ins

Add your chopped cinnamon pistachios to the center hole, then spin again using the โ€œRe-Spinโ€ function. This will blend everything into a perfectly smooth and creamy texture.

pistachio protein ice cream 02

Serve and Enjoy

Scoop your ninja creami pistachio ice cream into a bowl or straight from the pint. Top with extra pistachios if youโ€™re feeling fancy. Eat it all or save the rest for another dayโ€”no guilt here!

No Ninja Creami? Try This!

If you donโ€™t have a Ninja Creami, donโ€™t worryโ€”you can still make this low calorie pistachio ice cream recipe at home with just a blender and some freezer-friendly tools. The texture will be a little softer but still creamy, dreamy, and full of that rich pistachio flavor.

Blend the Base

In a high-speed blender, combine your vanilla protein shake, nonfat milk, pistachio paste, pudding mix, and whipped topping. Blend until smooth and fully incorporated.

Freeze in Ice Cube Trays

Pour the mixture into silicone ice cube trays or freezer molds. Freeze for at least 4โ€“6 hours, or until the cubes are solid all the way through.

Blend Until Creamy

Transfer the frozen cubes to a high-speed blender or food processor. Blend, scraping down the sides as needed, until the ice cream is smooth and soft-serve-like. Add a splash of milk only if needed to get things moving.

Fold in Pistachios and Serve

Once blended, fold in the chopped cinnamon pistachios by hand. Serve immediately for soft serve or pop it in the freezer for 30โ€“60 minutes if you prefer a firmer scoop.

Both versions of this high protein pistachio ice cream are easy, satisfying, and way better than anything store-bought. Choose your method and get scooping!

Tips and Tricks

Here are some simple tips and tricks to make your pistachio protein ice cream journey smooth, creamy, and oh-so-satisfying.

Feel free to personalize the flavor or textureโ€”this ninja creami pistachio protein ice cream is forgiving and adaptable. And with a few smart tweaks, youโ€™ll get even better results every time.

  • Use High-Quality Pistachio Paste: A good pistachio paste amps up the flavorโ€”opt for a pure paste (like Gusto Etna) for rich, authentic pistachio taste in your pistachio ice cream.
  • Pre-Chill the Base: Mixing your vanilla protein shake and nonfat milk ahead of time and chilling it before freezing helps the Ninja Creami pull in air early, resulting in a softer, smoother texture.
  • Thaw Time Matters: Donโ€™t skip the 20โ€“30 minute thaw! It ensures the ice cream spins smoothly and avoids that icy or crumbly ice cream pitfall.
  • Re-Spin as Needed: If the texture isnโ€™t quite creamy after the first spin, pop it right back in for another passโ€”ninja creami pistachio ice cream loves repeat spins.
  • Mixโ€‘In Timing: Add your crunchy cinnamon pistachios only after the first spinโ€”this way they stay crisp without turning soggy or getting pulverized.
  • Freeze Overnight: Trust the processโ€”freezing the pint for at least 8 hours (ideally coldest overnight) gives you that perfect scoopable texture for your high protein pistachio ice cream.

With these tweaks, your low calorie pistachio ice cream recipe will be silky, nutty, and utterly crave-worthy every timeโ€”or at least until the next craving hits.

Storage Instructions

Hereโ€™s how to keep your high protein pistachio ice cream fresh, flavorful, and ready to scoop whenever you need a healthy indulgence.

Aim to enjoy it within a week for best texture and tasteโ€”this ninja creami pistachio protein ice cream is best fresh, but stores beautifully with a few smart tips:

  • Freezer Storage Only: After making, keep your ice cream pint sealed with its lid and freeze it immediately to preserve creaminessโ€”donโ€™t leave it at room temp for more than 20 minutes.
  • Scoop, Then Store: If youโ€™ve scooped some out but want to keep the rest, gently press a piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap on top before resealing to prevent freezer burn.
  • Skip the Fridge: Since itโ€™s a frozen dessert, avoid refrigerating any leftoversโ€”heat and melting will lead to icy textures when refrozen.
  • Keep Mixโ€‘Ins Crisp: To maintain a crunch in each bite, avoid stirring repeatedly; just scoop and enjoyโ€”your cinnamon pistachios will stay crispy that way.

Follow these tips, and every scoop of your low calorie pistachio ice cream recipe will taste just like day oneโ€”smooth, nutty, and packed with protein bliss.

FAQs

Here are some of the top questions about this pistachio protein ice creamโ€”and answers to help you make it perfectly every time!

  1. Can I make this recipe without a Ninja Creami?

Yes! Blend all ingredients thoroughly, freeze overnight, then break into chunks and blend in a high-speed blender until smooth. Youโ€™ll miss the exact texture the Creami creates, but itโ€™s still creamy and delicious.

  2. What can I substitute for pistachio paste?

If pistachio paste isnโ€™t available, almond butter or cashew butter both work in a pinchโ€”just know youโ€™ll lose some of that signature pistachio flavor. You can add a sprinkle of ground pistachios on top for extra nuttiness.

  3. How do I adjust sweetness or protein content?

Feel free to swap the vanilla protein shake for a zero- or lowโ€‘sugar version to reduce calories, or use a higherโ€‘protein shake if you want more protein per serving. You can also skip the pudding mix and sweeten with stevia or sugar-free syrup to control sweetness and carbs.
